At CEDIA Expo 2009 the British subwoofer specialist REL, which is distributed in the US by Sumiko Audio, gave a preview of—and showed design concepts for—its upcoming group of flagship subwoofers, known as the Gibraltar series. REL subwoofers enjoys a particularly strong reputation among audiophiles, in part because the firm focuses not only on producing subs that offer high output and very deep bass extension, but also devotes great care to designing REL subs so that they will interface seamlessly with main speakers—even with speakers thought to be difficult to match with typical subwoofers.
The Gibraltar range will consist of two models: the G1 and G2. The Gibraltar G1 will feature a 700-watt Class A/B amplifeer and a 12-inch, carbon fiber, long throw woofer, and will be priced at $3500. The slightly smaller Gibraltar G2 will feature a 500-watt Class A/B amplifier and a 10-inch, carbon fiber, long throw woofer, and will be priced at $2750. Both models are slated for release in Q1, 2010.
