Linn Records partners with Universal Music to offer Studio Master downloads

From the Linn Records press release:

Linn Records and Universal Music Group have announced a landmark partnership to sell Universal’s rich catalogue as 24-bit Studio Master downloads. Albums from classic artists including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Diana Krall and John Coltrane can now be enjoyed by music lovers for the first time as the artists originally heard them in the recording studio.

Gilad Tiefenbrun, Linn’s Managing Director, said: “When we started our Studio Master download site in 2007, many people associated music downloading with piracy, young people and low quality. However, we quickly discovered, when given a choice, over half our customers opted for the Studio Master. Today that figure is more like 90% and growing. Universal Music’s archive is a treasure trove that will undoubtedly be highly desirable to our customers, and will accelerate the market’s trend towards high quality downloads.”

With the entire Beatles and Rolling Stones back catalogues already available at Studio Master and Neil Young’s call at the Dive into Media conference earlier this year for music fans to demand higher quality audio, this move by Universal is another significant milestone in the Studio Master journey to the mainstream. This partnership will see Linn and Universal releasing new albums in Studio Master in the coming months, including latest releases from Bob Marley and Melody Gardot.

Universal Music Group has also recognized the coming of age of digital music. Andrew Daw, Vice President of Strategic Marketing at Universal Music Group International, commented: "We know that an increasing number of our artists and musicians are welcoming the public's growing appetite for higher-quality audio in the digital domain, as well as other formats. This agreement with Linn is an important step along this road, especially given the company's deservedly high reputation for superior music systems."
